Kariroku (訶梨勒) - Incense Pouch with incense wood chips

This is a traditional Japanese scented hanging ornament known as Kariroku (訶梨勒).

The tassel is hand-finished by carefully unraveling the kumihimo (組紐) cord.

Kariroku was originally inspired by the fruit of a medicinal plant from India.  Because the fruit was traditionally valued for its medicinal properties, it came to be used as a protective ornament believed to ward off harmful influences.  In Japan, Kariroku developed into a decorative hanging incense pouch, traditionally displayed on pillars or walls and also used for tea gatherings and celebratory occasions.

Filled with natural fragrance, it can be displayed on a wall or placed in a room, where it adds both a subtle scent and a touch of Japanese tradition.
